About Us

Petersen Engineering was founded in 1992 to advance sustainability, occupant health and comfort, resiliency, and affordability in the built environment. In September 2026, Petersen Engineering joined SMRT Architects & Engineers, an integrated architecture and engineering firm founded in 1884 and headquartered in Portland, Maine, bringing expanded resources to our high-performance Passive House and MEP/FP engineering work while our team, projects, and commitment to sustainable design remain the same. We are a mission-driven engineering firm with a holistic, forward-thinking approach to helping clients create high-performance, sustainable projects. Since our founding, we have designed HVAC, electrical, fire protection, and plumbing systems for buildings of increasing size and complexity, building expertise in high-performance standards including LEED, net zero, and Passive House. Our vision is to lead the Northeast in high-performance MEP/FP engineering, measured by the buildings we help certify and the carbon they avoid.
