Your Role

As Plumbing Project Engineer, you will support the engineering, design, drafting, production, and the execution of project work. With support from Project Managers and Senior Engineers you will independently lead and manage project engineering and production from the schematic design (SD) phase through construction administration (CA). You will also delegate project tasks to designers and junior staff, and mentor them to expand their capacity. You will provide expert knowledge of applicable codes and regulations; extensive knowledge of standard engineering practices, techniques, and procedures; excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with and lead both internal and external clients to solve problems.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of MEP industry plumbing design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate building loads for all plumbing systems, select equipment, lay out piping, create and edit project details, and write and edit project engineering specifications.
  • Participate in design review meetings, workshops, and site visits.
  • Resolve a variety of complex design challenges including conflicting owner and project requirements, application of different system types, or challenging field conditions.
  • Research design options and document findings for the project team.
  • Assure drawings and designs are in accordance with local codes and design standards.
  • Coordinate with architectural and engineering disciplines as applicable.
  • Mentor and train junior staff in plumbing design.

Role Overview

As a member of the production team, you will be responsible for drafting and designing domestic water, waste, and vent systems for a variety of building types, while helping keep project elements organized for the Project Engineers. You will visit project sites to analyze existing systems and/or oversee construction of plumbing systems and will perform construction administration activities.

Responsibilities

  • Read and understand MEP and architectural construction documents, plans, specifications, etc.
  • Possess working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook.
  • Perform AutoCAD and Revit drafting and provide design support for a variety of building types and sizes through all phases of a project.
  • Lay out plumbing systems in conformance with code requirements and in coordination with other design disciplines.
  • Prepare for and participate in daily production meetings to establish task priority.
  • Conduct field investigations to integrate the design with existing systems and structures.
  • Collaborate with teammates.
  • Proficiently manage project information on the company file server and keep things organized.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with all project team members, in both spoken and written forms.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical ability and common sense.
  • Ensure tasks and deliverables are being completed in a timely, organized manner.

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Applicable Associate degree or technical trade school certification or comparable experience.
  • An understanding of domestic plumbing systems design fundamentals.
  • 1-3 years’ experience in Revit and AutoCAD.

Your Role

An excellent manager and technical/discipline lead, you will manage client relationships and incoming requests for proposals, attend preliminary walkthroughs and project meetings, and set up/define initial project goals and schedules. You will help onboard new projects, working with others on the team to launch them, define our approach, and draft conceptual and schematic narratives. You will facilitate the smooth transition of the work to the Project Manager and production team, and will serve as a resource to them, providing support and guidance for all aspects of the project. You will serve as a technical resource to junior staff, mentoring them and building their capacity so that they can continue to expand their skills. This role requires a unique combination of strong technical expertise, a willingness/ability to be interrupted frequently and share that expertise with more junior staff, and the ability to prioritize and reallocate work on the fly, as deadlines and departmental capacity require. While this position will not immediately have direct reports, we are looking for somebody with the aptitude and appetite to take on a departmental leadership role.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 10-15 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, with experience serving as senior ME in a client-facing role.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience managing people and projects – certificate in leadership/management or other similar training/experience strongly preferred.
  • Sustainable building design experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • PE credential strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as engineering team lead and Mechanical/HVAC subject matter expert, internally and externally, from conceptual design through construction administration.
  • Research project requirements and identify potential design solutions.
  • Attend kick-off meetings, walk-throughs of existing buildings/renovation projects, and site visits as needed.
  • Analyze, design and present technical material in traditional and innovative ways for review by technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Understand trends and standard methodologies in the markets in which we work.
  • Participate in the QC process by reviewing drawings and evaluating the need for design changes; make appropriate recommendations.
  • Assist Project Engineer with selection and specification of mechanical equipment such as boilers, chillers, and air handling units.

Your Role

With support from Project Managers (PMs), Senior Engineering you will independently lead and manage project engineering and production from the schematic design (SD) phase, through the design development (DD), Construction Document (CD), ad construction administration (CA) phases of the project. You will also delegate project tasks to designers and junior staff, and mention them to expand their capacity. We anticipate that your role and skill set will grow as we continue to grow. We are excited about providing you with the coaching, mentoring and professional development support you need to advance within our team. – potentially becoming a Project Manager, a Senior Engineer, and/or a member of our leadership team, depending on your appetite for continuing education.

  • 5-10 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Support Project Managers in performing MP/FP project engineering and design work.
  • Participate in project meetings, taking notes, and gaining detailed understanding of the project. 
  • Lead the project engineering efforts as defined by the PM in the SD phase of the project. 
  • For each project, define discipline0specific tasks and create a list of required tasks with descriptions and due dates to keep the project timely and on track.
  • Maintain an up-to-date list of coordination items for each project.
  • Organize and delegate project tasks to designers/junior staff.
  • Manage the production and engineering tasks for multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Be the first line of communication on PEI project team emails. 
    – Review and respond within one business day
    – Determine/evaluate when PM involvement is required and escalate as needed. 
  • Determine when to communicate with directly with client peers (Project Architects) and when to defer communications to the PEI Project Manager 
  • Be first responder on project CA: submittals and RFIs.
  • Adapt to changing project demands, constraints, and challenges as needed. 
  • Serve as a resource, mentor, and instructor to designers by:
    -Clearly communication tasks and deadlines
    -Providing instruction and answering questions

Project Engineering

  • With PM leadership and oversight, author SD level system narrative and options narratives.
  • Lead and/or delegate drawing set up, drafting, and MEP/FP design as appropriate. 
    Perform/oversee heating and cooling load calculations and energy modeling production using Carrier HAP, WUFI Passive, and other relevant software. 
  • Performance engineering calculations, including fire protection hydraulic calculations, duct static pressure/fan sizing, hydronic calculation/pump sizing. 
  • Review, interpret and apply strong working knowledge of building, mechanical, plumbing and energy codes. 
  • Research, size, and select project MP/FP equipment in accordance with the project goals, schematic narrative, and project manager direction. 
  • Review, interpret and coordinate updated architectural drawings into project progress. 
  • Track updated drawings and accurately manager drawings set versions and archives.
  • Draft, edit and write MEP/FP specifications for projects with input from Senior Engineers & Project Managers. 
  • Assist with project specific paperwork, including EnergyStar and COMcheck. 
  • Collaborate with other team members to deliver mechanical/electrical coordination drawing sets. 
  • Review and mark up drafting work performed by junior designers.
  • Perform/delegate construction administration tasks, including logging and review o submittals, RFI’s and providing sketches if required. 
  • Perform site visits and write site reports. 

Organizational

  • Participate in daily team meetings, monitoring and communicating updated project requirements to the team, updating project board as needed to keep current with week’s work, suggesting methods for allocating staff resources to meet deadlines, and working with other team members to meet deadines.
  • Help maintain server files storage conventions and file and folder naming conventions
  • Maintain office AutoCAD and Revit drafting standards for MEP/FP systems.
